I am very proud to be headteacher at Deri Primary School. I am part of a very committed and hard-working team of teachers, teaching assistants and support staff who all strive to ensure the best learning experiences for our children. Remembrance Day 2024

Our Heddlu Bach represented the school at the remembrance day service in the village today. Da iawn pawb. 

Football success! 

On Thursday 26th September our football team made a great start to the season with 3 wins out of 4 matches. Da iawn pawb. 

Debating fun!

3 pupils from year 5 competed in Bargoed Rotary Club's Youth Speak debating competition at St Gwyladys Primary School on Wednesday 12th June. The discussed the impact of artificial intelligence. The pupils spoke clearly and confidently and enjoyed the opportunity to develop their oracy skills. The are very proud of their medals for participation. 

Terry Gauden from the British Legion presented the school with a certificate for the hard work selling poppies. 

Our Heddlu Bach participated in a community flag raising ceremony to commemorate D Day. 

The Children of Years 2, 3 and 4 wowed us in their performance of Grease at the Blackwood Miners' Institute. Check out the slide show below. 

​Unveiling of the Darran and Deri Railway Commemorative Plaque

On Wednesday 15th May the year 5 and 6 children attended the unveiling of a commemorative plaque for the Darran and Deri Railway Station. The children's poetry and artwork were on display alongside the information from the Darran Valley History Group at the community centre. 4 children were awarded prizes for their work and all the children represented the school extremely well. Deri primary school showing that it really is at the heart of the community. 

Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative

What a fantastic last day of term with our Easter bonnet parade and visit from the Easter Bunny!

Red Nose Day 2024

Children wore their own clothes/red nose themed clothes and noses and donated £1 for Comic Relief. We raised £72

Young Promoters

Da iawn to the children in year 4/5/6 who helped to organise a fantastic event in school for all the community. Here they are being presented with their young promoters certificates for promoting the Arts Council Wales show ' Breathe'. 

World Book day 2024

What a fantastic World Book Day. The children enjoyed lots of book themed activities and entered our 'Dress A Veg' competition. Our winners were N/R - Danny,  Yr1/2 Charlotte, Yr3/4 Jorgie and Yr 5/6 Erin. Da iawn pawb. Book prizes all round!

St. David's Day 2024

What a fantastic celebration of Welsh language, culture and heritage in our Eisteddfod. The children were fantastic and entered the usual competitions. congratulations to our new Bardd. 

New Football Kit

We would like to say a huge thank you to Alan Price and Sons Ltd. for sponsoring our brand new football kit. The children are thrilled and can't wait to try it out. Watch this space!

Platinum+ Award

Welsh heritage Schools Initiative

On Friday 8th July 2 members of the History club and Miss Bourne went to St Fagons Museum in Cardiff to attend the awards ceremony for the Welsh Heritage Schools Initiative. The History group had completed a project about Ysgwyddgwyn Chapel which recently closed in Deri. The group researched the history of the chapel, discovered memories of local residents and created a display. They entered the competition and won first prize in The Catherine and Daniel Phillips Memorial Prize Hodge Foundation and won £250. Well done History Club #LegenDeri

Year 1 and Year 2 in Octopus Energy Design Awards

Year 1 and Year 2 visited the wind turbine above Deri on Thursday 8th July to enjoy a science filled morning learning about wind, wind turbines and sustainable green energy. The children enjoyed a science show from 'Boffin John' and were treated to refreshments. All this was provided by Octopus Energy who own the wind turbine above Deri. The children entered a design a poster competition for wind Turbine 2. All the children received goody bags. The four runners up, Jayke, Scarlett, Lacey May and Netty were awarded fluffy Octopus teddies. The winning design which you can see on the wind turbine itself was designed by Alyssa who won an ipad! The children were so well behaved and had great fun! The video of the event is being created by Octopus Energy and will be shared soon so watch this space.

Our School Council met with Gerald Jones M.P. 

Our School Council members were lucky enough to ask questions to Gerald Jones P.M. They asked questions about Global warming, Litter, improving schools and Mental Health provision for young people. It was great to have the opportunity to chat online and now we have an action plan for our school council. The children received certificates for their participation. Da iawn pawb!
